I have lunch with my bestie MIchaela, proprietress of Eff That S!, at least once a week. It a nice reprieve from desk work and she shares my zest for deliciousness.
This day, however, was different because we were dining AS THE WORLD BURNED.
This is only sort of an exaggeration; large swathes of San Diego are on fire. Luckily though, I live in work in a very urban part of the city and the wildfires are further out in the suburbs. It unlikely that my neighborhood will catch on fire, unless someone drops a pipe on a pile of old hoarded newspapers. It's one of the times I can be truly grateful for the concrete sprawl of our side of the city. (But not TOO grateful because the temperature is 100+ degrees and the air outside is nasty and lung-coating from all the smoke surrounding us.)
With that, perhaps I should mention that we ordered...
Great drink for such a sweltering day. It was very refreshing, though I thought it could use just a little more lavender flavor. It wasn't too cloyingly sweet, as your All-American Country Time 5% Lemonade-Style Drinks can be. Michaela liked it as well.
Pear + Gorgonzola Pizza: caramelized onion + pecan + balsamic
Too. Much. Arugula. It wasn't even listed as an ingredient on the menu, which seemingly listed every single other ingredient. I ended up scraping some off. Great pizza otherwise though: the ingredients were very fresh, especially the pears. I must admit that the evil arugula was quite fresh and snappy and not soggy, even on the last slice I had.
Spicy Shrimp Angel Hair Puttanesca: olive + caper + tomato
Michaela had this. Her report was that the pasta was perfectly cooked and there was a good mix of flavors. We commiserated about not liking the tails to be left on shrimp, but it wasn't a deal breaker in this case, just a nuisance. It is seemingly the preferred serving method at most restaurants but it is not our thang.
- Their air conditioning game was ON POINT. I didn't even notice the temperature in either direction. That is PERFECT on a hot day like this.
- The previous time I ate here, we had the MOST AMAZING appetizer: gorgonzola + walnut mousse + wine poached pear. It comes in a little jar and you spread it on bread. They offer all the jarred appetizers to-go for a few dollars more, and you can bet I took a jar of this home and ate it on rye bread for breakfast the next couple of mornings.
- Fast service, which is perfect because I only have an hour away from work.
Verdict: good place for a weekday bestie lunch.
